The Comparison between Holy Quran And The Bible
The Bible and the Koran are the two most popular religious texts that exist they're each considered in Christianity and Islam respectively as Sacred. Yeah, these sacred texts are not equal in nature Composition transmission as well as the way they are used in this episode of reality facts We'll be exploring these differences and some similarities between the Bible and the Quran. verifiable differences between them for those of you who may not be familiar with either book now if you're someone who's read the Quran or The Bible or even parts of them leave a like on this. I'm gonna do that by first looking at the meaning of the word BibleSo the word Bible comes from the Latin Biblia meaning books so the Bible is a collection of books and is divided into two major divisions the Old Testament which contains 39 separate books and the New Testament which contains 27 books each of these books is further divided into chapters and verses the Old Testament relays a story of God and his people Before the birth of Jesus and it begins with the creation of the world and then outlines the story of the Jewish nation now the New Testament begins with the life of Jesus Christ and it explains the story of God and his people from the birth of Christ onward now I'm gonna look at what the Quran actually is starting off also with what the word means. Well, the word Quran literally means recitation Muslims believe that the words of the Quran were originally revealed by the angel Gabriel to the Prophet Muhammad in the Arabic language And he then recited them to his followers. Some years after the Prophet Muhammad's passing the verses of the Quran were compiled into a written text arranged in 114 surahs with each surah representing a chapter or division the readers of the Koran can find a whole range of different themes in these chapters including prayers and praises to God.
There are also stories of messengers before the Prophet Muhammad while it's possible to translate Arabic text of the Quran into other languages Muslims generally considered translations to be Interpretations and not the actual Quran itself So the next difference I'm gonna look at is the revelation of these two books Like how was the content of these books revealed to humanity? First up with the Bible? So certain books were revealed to prophets by God through dreams and visions certain historical accounts were written down by the people
The Word of God came to prophets directly and they would write down the messages or communicate it to someone else to write it down Also, there were words of the prophets that not necessarily were directly instructed by God. But those words were included as well So you can see there were many ways in which the writings that make up The Bible were revealed for the Quran everything in the Quran is considered to be the Word of God No, human words were included in the Quran at all. Now which religions follow these different holy texts well the religions that follow the scriptures of the Bible are Christianity and Judaism Islam is the only religion. That follows the scriptures of the Quran Although Quran mentions a Torah the Psalms and the Gospels as revealed by God Muslims. However Generally believe that these have been corrupted and changed over time and only the Quran remains in its puristUnchanged state now
I'm gonna be exploring the Bible and the Quran and looking at certain
Concepts side-by-side and showing you the differences that they have between them starting off with a sinful nature of human beings
so the Bible says that as descendants of Adam all have been born with a
Sinful nature the Muslim view on this is that man was actually born innocent
So when you look at how we can achieve salvation
According to the Bible and the Quran there's two different views while the Bible says that it's by grace alone
That you're saved through faith in God the Quran outlines a different way to salvation
It states that in order to attain salvation. Your good deeds must outweigh
Your bad deeds another major differences between the two books is the story of Jesus
Especially about whether or not Jesus was crucified. So the Quran doesn't acknowledge the death and resurrection of Jesus
There's various passages in the Quran that say that Allah made it appear to the Jews that Jesus was crucified in the mean time
However, a lot took Jesus up to heaven while the Bible
of course in great detail speaks about Jesus actually dying and being buried in a tomb and then
Resurrected and taken to heaven so I know I just talked about the differing views that the Bible and the Quran have on
Whether or not man was born sinful or innocent
They also have differing views on how mankind fell from being perfect
And yeah
Now we're kind of in the state that we are now according to the Bible before sin happened Adam and Eve are given free
access to eat of the fruit of the tree of life and this allowed them to live forever and the
Forbidden tree that they were not supposed to eat from is identified as a tree of knowledge of good and evil
Of course it disobeyed God they ate from it
that was the first sin and
Yeah, things went downhill from there in the Quran
The tree of eternity is equated to be The Tree of Life similar to the Bible
That was a tree that was actually considered forbidden and there's no mention of the name the tree of knowledge of good and evil
In the Quran now, we've bought into a lot more information about Islam and other religions and other episodes here on FTD facts
So for that
I have a link to a playlist where you can watch all the videos that we've done about Islam and I have a link to
Another playlist of the other religions that we've spoken about here
You definitely don't want to miss those because of course. I can't cover everything in this episode
So yeah, I highly recommend those videos as well. I'll link to them down below in the video description
They'll be in the card section as well as I'll link to them in the end screen of this episode
So now I want to look in great detail about the different versions if you will up the Bible
I know there's a lot of debate of whether or not no this is a version
Versus this is just a translation
So I'm going to take it just a snapshot view of the history of the Bible
The Koran and then you can compare the two of them and you'll give you some insight as to why there's so many different
translations or versions of the Bible and the Koran as well as what Christians actually believe about the different versions and what
Muslims believe so when it comes to the Bible
There are literally hundreds of different translations of the Bible just in English alone like the King James
Version the New International Version the Youngs literal
Translation and the English standard version just to name a few for many people. It's hard to choose. Okay
Which Bible do I read? Which one is the most accurate one?
because some of the older language like from the King James Version for instance is
often a lot more difficult to read because some of those words we just don't use
Anymore the original languages that the writings of the Bible were based on come from the ancient Hebrew Aramaic and Greek
manuscripts and the earliest biblical texts were written on scrolls made from papyrus or
parchment and the biblical
Books had to be copied over and over and over again just so that they can be preserved and people of later
generations could read them
Now this process of rewriting the books of the Bible often wasn't perfect at all because sometimes mistakes were made
some words were added and taken out and this whole process is called the
Transmission of the text and oftentimes the changes in transmission wasn't just due to an honest mistake
But I'll give an example to kind of
Illustrate how and why these changes were made say?
For example that a Jewish scribe lived in Egypt and he had several scrolls and other writings and oral traditions
associated to the Prophet Jeremiah that scribe would then edit down the text so it can fit into one scroll and
Then would call it the scroll of Jeremiah and then perhaps there was another scribe that lived in Jerusalem, for example
He received that scroll of Jeremiah and he edited down the text to reflect his own Community's theology as well as a culture and the general understanding of Jeremiah so over time Editions of these books were collected and the religious communities gradually narrowed down the lists of their books that they deemed to be
Authoritative and the different communities use different criteria to determine which books were
Authoritative and this process of including certain books and scriptures and rejecting others is called
canonization now when we look at the Koran certain variant readings that existed and increase in numbers as
those who had memorized the text passed away and also because of the basic Arabic script lacked vowels and
punctuation in the fourth century of Islam
It was decided to return to readings handed down from seven authoritative readers
Now these seven basic texts each have two transmitted versions with only some minor
variations in phrasing
But all containing vowels and other necessary punctuation that we need to understand what the text is really saying
So to summarize the Quran has been passed down from men called the readers
They were famous reciters of the Quran in the early centuries of Islam
And the way these men recited the Quran was formally recorded in textual versions by men called
Transmitters so the Quran has come through various different
transmitted versions and according to Islam
You cannot recite or read the Quran except through one of these versions
each versions has its own chain of
Narrators and the Quran as we know it today was first compiled into a book format by zaid bin
Dobbin and he was a personal scribe of the Prophet Muhammad as well as there's other scribes that helped contribute to this under the third
Caliph with maan. So because of this the Quran that exists today is also known as that with monic codex
Okay
So that's everything I have for you on the differences between the Bible and the Quran what other differences do
